About Burmester & Vogel

Burmester & Vogel builds software for the commercial side of shipping. We started with demurrage and laytime management, two of the most complex processes in maritime logistics, and have since expanded into new product lines, including vessel valuation and a growing suite of intelligent tools for the wider supply chain.

Today we serve over 150 leading companies worldwide and manage over one billion tons of cargo annually. We are growing quickly, and each new hire shapes what we launch next.

Position Description

Burmester & Vogel is seeking an AI Engineer to lead AI orchestration across our products. You will design, build, and run the systems that connect large language models, tools, and data to our maritime applications, and you will help expand the company's overall AI capability. You will work in an Agile team and play a key role in bringing AI into mission-critical, enterprise-scale systems.

Responsibilities

  • Design and maintain the orchestration layer for LLM-powered features: prompt and context management, tool calling, retrieval, and multi-step agent workflows
  • Integrate AI capabilities into our Voyage Management System and other products through well-defined APIs and services
  • Build evaluation suites and monitoring that measure quality, latency, cost, and failure modes in production
  • Build retrieval pipelines over maritime documents and data, such as charter parties, statements of facts, voyage records, and market data
  • Apply guardrails for security, data privacy, and access control, including the handling of sensitive and export-controlled data
  • Prepare estimates, prioritize work, and run peer reviews
  • Work with product, engineering, and domain experts to find where AI gives users real leverage, and say plainly where it does not
  • Track new models and tooling, and present recommendations for architectural review

Requirements

  • 3+ years of software engineering experience, including hands-on work building applications with machine learning or large language models
  • Strong Python and/or TypeScript skills
  • Hands-on experience with LLM APIs (e.g., Azure OpenAI, Anthropic) and orchestration patterns such as tool use, retrieval-augmented generation, and agents
  • Experience designing evaluations for non-deterministic systems
  • Experience with embeddings and vector search (e.g., Azure AI Search, pgvector)
  • Experience building and deploying services on a cloud platform, ideally Azure, with containers and CI/CD
  • Understanding of the design principles behind scalable, observable services
  • Daily working knowledge of Git and modern build tools

Education and Certifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent work experience
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Engineer Associate or a related certification

Desired (Not Required)

  • Experience with document understanding or information extraction from semi-structured documents
  • Experience with maritime, logistics, or commodity trading data
  • Experience working with U.S. Public Sector customers (DHS or DoD)
  • DoD security clearance

Work Schedule

Our systems run 24/7/365, so you may be asked to provide out-of-hours, on-call support. Additional compensation may be available for on-call, standby, or holiday hours.
